Washington, W. H. Harrison, Jackson, Taylor, Pierce, Andrew Johnson, Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Benjamin Harrison and Eisenhower were all some type of general at some time before they were president. Johnson was given the rank of brigadier general when he was appointed military governor of Tennessee after it was captured by Union forces in the Civil War. Washington, W.
