Spain and Portugal were the leaders of the Age of Discovery, or of Exploration. This era began when the Portuguese explored Africa's west coast in 1418, followed by the Spanish discovery of America in 1492. The ocean route to the East was discovered in 1498, spurring European expeditions across the Atlantic and Pacific throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. This period is generally accepted as the transition from the Middle Ages to the Modern era and led to contact with the New World, colonialism, empires, transfers of goods, ideas, illnesses, and people.
