The two major events that allowed Hitler to gain total control of Germany prior to World War 2 was the following:

1. After the death of Von Hindenburg, Hitler was able to be both Chancellor and President of Germany. This was vital. It's importance cannot be over estimated. Prior to the death of Von Hindenburg, Hitler was yes, Chancellor. But that meant he had the top position in the German Government. Hitler maneuvered to hold the office of President which gave him the top position of the German State. This position meant that while Von Hindenburg held the position of President, he could in fact order the Army to simply remove Hitler from the position of Chancellor. ( naturally there would need to be a reason, but there was reason enough, such as Hitler's suppression of a free press & more)

2. Hitler managed to do what even Bismarck was not able to do. Namely the Army swore allegiance to Hitler personally. ( A deal had been struck of course )

Looking into ancient history, Augustus Caesar, accomplished the same thing. The Roman legions did not swear allegiance to the Roman State, they swore allegiance to Augustus personally.

What chain of events led to world war 2?

It all starts back in World War I, with a loner German Soldier Adolf Hitler. Hitler thought highly of the German Army and the German country. When he saw the allies beat the Germans and then use the Treaty of Versailles (Which I'll get to later) destroy the rest of Germany that the war hadn't he was furios. The Treat of Versailles basically to sum it up, blamed Germany for WWI, robbed Germany of its money and took away parts of its land. Germany did not recover until 1933, when Adolf Hitler became Chancellor. He promised return of money, honor, and land to Germany. Germany added Austria and the Sudetenland back to Germany. Hitler then turned to Poland. We all know what happened then- World War II.
