Including the seven states which had seceded from the U. S. between the time of Abraham Lincoln's election and his inauguration, there were a total of 34 states at the beginning of Lincoln's presidency. Another six states, at least for a little while, seceded after Lincoln took office, and two other states, West Virginia, which had been part of Virginia, one of the states that seceded, and Nevada, were admitted to the Union during Lincoln's presidency. At the time of President Lincoln's assassination, there were a total of 36 states, including eleven which had seceded and would later be readmitted to the Union.

On April 12, 1861, America was split up into two parts. The north & the south. The North was the United States of America. The South was the Confederate States of America. The president of the Confederate States of America was Jefferson Davis. The president of the United States of America was Abraham Lincoln. They were considered the Presidents of the Civil War.
That was President Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States.

Abraham Lincoln was one of the hardest working presidents ever. He was going through a rough time as a president during the Civil War Era. Two of his sons died at an early age, one while he was president. He started from a poor farm boy who couldn't read to the president of the United States. We could learn so much from Abraham Lincoln.
Lincoln was a lawyer and postmaster

Abraham Lincoln was 52 years and two months old on April 12, 1861 when the shooting began in the Civil war. He was the President of the United States at the time- he did not exactly "join" the war, but he was certainly involved with it.
