Moses brought down stone tablets on which were written the words of a message concerning what the Creator expected of the nation, and he did this on two separate occasions. On the first occasion, before Moses had reached the bottom of the mountain, he was informed that the people were involved in the sin of the Golden Calf, whereupon he smashed the tablets that he carried. Later, he returned to the summit, and received another set of tablets. Both sets ... the shattered tablets and the intact ones ... were preserved in the Ark, within the Holy of Holies, in the interior of the traveling tabernacle.
