The oiler USS Yukon has been involved in at least 3 collisions, including a refueling tanker in 2012 and on Feb. 27, 2000, when it collided with a 135-foot civilian cargo ship while trying to enter Dubai's Jebel Ali port in the United Arab Emirates. Furthermore, less than five months later, it was hit by the USS Denver during refueling off the coast of Hawaii, where both ships sustained heavy damage. While the Yukon is a 677-foot tanker that replenishes oil for other Navy ships in the Pacific fleet, the Essex is an 844-foot-long vessel that resembles a small aircraft carrier and is due to return to San Diego on Thursday after 12 years based in Sasebo, Japan, as command ship for the Navy's Expeditionary Strike Group 7.

In the pre-dawn darkness of Oct. 14, 1996, the USS Theodore Roosevelt was maneuvering in the choppy Atlantic waters 100 miles off Cape Hatteras, N.C. The carrier was "backing down" -- reversing -- when it collided with a cruiser, the USS Leyte Gulf, in a thunderous screech of steel that knocked sailors to the decks and caused $10 million in damage. During the building of the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis part of the stern was removed to be used to repair the USS Roosevelt.

The 600-ship never quite made it that far, but it got close - it topped out at around 535 total active ships.
