engine and primary share the same oil on the 1976 sportster, due to engine oil sumps into primary.
Primary oil and transmission are the same. The crankcase is different. They are separated.
the trans and primary fluid on a sportster are the same (1 qt sport trans) look for the drain under the derby cover.
You have to assemble the engine sprocket, primary chain and clutch basket together, then put the whole thing on as one unit. The sprocket goes over the engine shaft at the same time the clutch drum goes on to its shaft. Then you tighten both the clutch hub nut and the engine shaft nut up to 150ft lbs. To dig this far into a Sportster engine, you need to have a good workshop manual and a factory parts book. Also, try the xlforum.net Ironhead forum for advice.
There is no transmission drain plug. Your transmission uses the same oil from the primary. Draining your primary drains your transmission.
You don't, it uses the same oil as the engine. WHOA! do NOT go by that last answer somebody left. Japanese bikes share the same oil in the engine and transmission. Harleys do NOT share engine oil with the transmission. Tranny oil must be checked and changed separately than from the engine. You must open the derby cover over the clutch to check and add transmission oil on a newer Sportster. Older Ironhead Sportsters have an inspection plug on the primary. have someone hold the bike straight up, you will get a false level on the kickstand. It uses 20-50wt motor oil OR HD primary oil. There's also a chain inside that primary that has to be adjusted regularly. Get a factory service manual.
under the back of the primary. either feel around or look under the primary and you will see it. Sportsters use the same fluid for the trans and primary.
No, the engine oil and trans oil are not fed from the same tank on H.D. bikes. Engine oil is separate, from the primary drive chain on 4 speed big twins, the transmission oil is also separate. Sportster engines have separate engine oil and their transmissions share primary case oil with the wet clutch. 5 speed models wet clutch models have separate primary case lube, transmission lube and engine oil. As far as my memory serves, no Harley Davidsons have shared engine oil and transmission oil similar to some Jap bikes
Take the rotor and the clutch basket off at the same time
Yes. Same from 89-99
In all cases, from Big Twin, V-Rod, and Sportster, yes.
I have a 2006 XL1200R that intermittently does the same thing (I'm wondering if it has something to do with primary chain tension).
