Charles Dickens wrote A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and other hit novels of 19th-century England. Dickens grew up in poverty, and it shows in his writing: he is known for his orphans and urchins, rogues, shopkeepers, stuffed shirts, widows, and other colorful characters pulled from the sooty streets of London. An all-around workhorse, Dickens edited a monthly magazine, wrote novels, gave public readings and came out with a Christmas story every year. His novels were often published first in serial form -- as chapter-by-chapter monthly installments in magazines of the day. Among his major works are Oliver Twist (completed 1839), The Old Curiosity Shop (1841), David Copperfield (1850), the historical drama A Tale of Two Cities (1859), and Great Expectations (1861). His 1843 tale A Christmas Carol featured the grouchy miser Ebenezer Scrooge and the sickly tot Tiny Tim. It remains a popular holiday classic and perhaps his most famous tale.
Dickens used the pen name Boz early in his career, and his first publication was the short story collection Sketches By Boz (1836)... Oliver Twist was the basis for the stage musical Oliver!; the show won the Tony Award for best musical in 1963, and a 1968 movie version (with Jack Wild as the Artful Dodger) won the Academy Award for best picture... Dickens married the former Catherine Hogarth in 1836. They had 10 children, but their marriage was often tense, and they separated in 1858... He was buried in Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey, near Geoffrey Chaucer and other fellow writers.
Charles Dickens was a 19th-century English novelist known for his vivid characters and depictions of social issues. He is considered a literary giant of the Victorian era, with works like "Great Expectations," "A Tale of Two Cities," and "Oliver Twist" being among his most popular and enduring works.
He was a creative man who took his life experiences and made them in to relate-able stories. He was a loving kind man who gave his readers a good time.
Dickens appears to have been a highly ambitious man who had the talent to be successful and a gift for being famous. He was a little vain and was a flashy, not to say vulgar, dresser. He had huge powers of concentration and focus--he could write chapter after chapter in the same room where his family (remember, wife and 10 kids!) were entertaining guests. He loved his parents, in a sort of paternal way; his improvident father was always in need of money and couldn't seem to get his life together. And he loved his children, although from some remarks made by his daughter, he might not have been a particularly affectionate father. And he loved his wife, at least at the time they married. But they quickly grew apart and at some point he realized he no longer loved or and they shared no interests. In 1858, he separated from her, although they never divorced. (Divorce at the time was outrageously expensive and literally required an Act of Parliament.) Dickens' suffered from insomnia and spent many nights walking London, going to the docks, the markets, the slums . . . he probably knew the city as well as anyone of the time. He was a philanthropist and was generous with both his time and his money.
While it's unfair--and nigh impossible--to accurately describe even a well-known character from so long ago, below are some of the characteristics that have come down to us from friends and family: Like everyone else, his character was a mixed bag of pleasant and unpleasant characteristics. He was rigid and almost tyranical with his family; he spoiled his children then complained when they were spendthrifts; he had difficulty accepting blame or responsibility (he resented his wife for having so many children); he could be self-centered and he carried grudges. He possessed a huge ego, which often led him to unwise actions (he chose to conduct his separation from his wife in the pages of the newspaper). On the other hand, he was generous with his time and money; he was an excellent orator and amateur actor; he was a brilliant writer of fantasy, satire and realism; he was exceptionally loyal (and just as firm in his grievances), and when he loved, he loved totally. In other words, Dickens was just as flawed and as exceptional as everyone else.
Dickens's family was middle class, although as a child, he dreamt of being a gentlemen. As an adult--a hugely successful and wealthy adult--he mixed with the highest classes, up to and including Royalty.
