What is best? Well, it is a fit between efficiency and comfort.

You can cover a radiant floor with practically anything, but generally less is more.

Bare concrete will transfer heat at the lowest design water temperature, followed by vinyl, tile, engineered wood, marble, engineered bamboo, oak, maple, thin carpet and pad and cork in typical installed thicknesses.

Low design temperatures mean lower fuel bills, especially when a condensing boiler is used as the heat source.

Most suppliers will have an R value for their product which is a critical design detail that must be determined before starting any radiant floor design.

How do you heat homes on slab?

No different than any other house. Heat ducts can be put into the slab when it is poured or they can be run through the attic and walls and a forced air furnace is used. Wall furnace, baseboard heat or they could have radiant heat in the floor.

What type of hardwood floor can be laid on concrete heated floor?

An engineered hardwood floor can be floated or glued-down directly to the floor.Someone has changed the original question, or added it to this question, for what reason I have no clue.Question; Can you put underfloor heating under hardwood floorsYes, thousands of homes have radiant heat that runs in between the floor joist of a home. This is done underneath the floor and sub floor and if you where in the basement, when you look up between the floor joist, you would see the heat lines. This is accomplishedwith the use of a boiler. The lines do not throw off massive heat that would cause the hardwood floor to warp or buckle.

What are the differences of dry steam and radiant systems?

Dry steam systems are a heating and coolingÊsystem that has steam that does not contain water droplets. Radiant systems are where heat and cooling systems where heat is exchanged through convection and conduction.Ê

Does radiant floor heating work as well as radiant ceiling heating?

The answer is no. Radiant ceiling heating does not work as well as radiant floor heating in that heat rises so having heat in the ceiling will not be as efficient as heating in the floor.

Why is radiant floor heating better then central heat?

Radiant floor heat is considered by many to be better than central heat because it is much better for our environment. Another reason is that is cost less to heat your house using radiant floor heat than central heating.

Can radiant floor heat alone is enough heat too heat up a house by itsself?

it depends of your house. if it has more than one floor then it might not. it also depends on how many rooms has radiant floor

What is radiant heat, how is it made, and where does it come from?

Radiant heat is wonderful. It takes heat from an energy source--such as electrical coils in a ceiling--and warms the surrounding area gently. In the case of ceiling radiant heat, the warmth gradually spreads through the room. Radiant heating in a floor is a better choice because heat rises.

DIY Electric Radiant Heat Flooring?

Choosing electric radiant heat flooring can be a convenient and cost-effective way to heat your home. Many flooring systems are now available that homeowners can install themselves. Here are a few pointers on these systems and their advantages. Most electric radiant heat flooring systems are designed to be laid onto the subfloor. This is done in one of two ways: laying a pattern of loose wire over the floor held in place with tiny clips, or laying a plastic or rubber mat or mesh with the wire embedded in it over the floor. Loose-wire installation is good for areas that have odd shapes or curved walls. Installing mats is much easier and similar to laying vinyl floor tiles. Loose-wire electric flooring is further held in place with lightweight concrete or self-leveling compound. Electric mat flooring is laid on a layer of thin set or stapled to the subfloor. In most cases, electric mats are covered with thin set or self-leveling compound to provide a smooth surface for your floor covering. Also, subfloors must be insulated to prevent the electric heat from moving downward rather than up into the room. Concrete subfloors will need an underlayment of cork or insulation board. Some mat systems come with a special layer of aluminum that reflects the heat upward. Although almost any floor covering can be used with electric radiant heat, ceramic tile or other “stone-like” materials are recommended. Ceramic tile stores heat longer and can heat a room more evenly. Wood laminate and engineered flooring can be used but the manufacturer’s specifications for maximum temperature must be followed strictly in order to prevent warping and preserve the warranty. Carpeting and hardwood flooring are also possible but the thicker these materials are the more they act as insulation trapping heat in the subfloor. Although radiant floor heating is not the perfect heating solution in areas where electricity rates are highest, it is generally no more expensive than leaving your lights on all day for six months out of the year. With its low-cost installation and nearly-zero maintenance, electric radiant heat flooring can provide you with warmth and comfort for the life of your home.
