What type of fluid goes in my tranny 98 GMC Sonoma 2.2 with a 5speed manual transmission you have heard that GM switched manual from gear oil to dextron but you are not sure what year that took place?

The owners manual for my '95 Sonoma 2.2L, 5 speed, indicates DexronIII/Mercon not gear oil, so the switch must have been 1995 or earlier.
