When Carolina was first colonized, the settlers brought many foods with them, such as potatoes. However, they found many local foods to be tasty. Corn grew in the Americas, and the British grew to enjoy it. Colonists hunted animals in the forests - deer, bear, raccoons, and wild pigs. They caught fish in the local waters and trapped birds. The coast of South Carolina proved to be an excellent location to grow rice, and for many years rice and cotton were our main cash crops.
