The overcast stitch is a type of hand sewing used on a raw (unfinished) edge to prevent unraveling of the fabric. It is stitched twice over the edge of the fabric to make a zigzag.
Use a long stitch, with heavy thread, and a 16 or 18 size needle. That should do it!
A backstitch is a type of sewing stitch where the stitch goes backwards on the top side of the fabric and doubles forward on the bottom - a very tight stitching style.
The main stitch used is the straight stitch. You will do the majority of sewing with this one. The zig-zag is probably the next most-used one. With a few exceptions, most of the rest of the stitches are more for decorating. Don't be fooled by the "eye candy" on some of the new machines. If you are not a hard-core sewing enthusiast, a simple machine that offers straight, zig-zag, and reverse, is a great starting point.
blanket stitch, its simple and sturdy i use it for my thick and thin patches on my punk vest and ironically my uncles cop uniform
You should have an instruction booklet with your machine. That will show you where everything is. This will vary from machine to machine with some being simple and others you should be a rocket scientist to use. The stitch width selector is pretty self explanatory. You use it to select the width of the stitch you want to use in a zig zag stitch.
Is a type of stitch that has a combination of running stitch and back stitch .:)
to do applique on a sewing machine you will need a sewing machine (complete with bobbin/threads etc.) and the ability to change the stitch type on it. I'm not sure about doing it by hand though. :)
stitch and tear is a type of fabric structure used in textiles.
Stitch length is going to depend greatly on the fabric. You are going to use a longer stitch length on denim than you are on chiffon. That is why it is important to test and adjust your stitch length on a scrap of fabric before you begin sewing your project.
Stitches on your face after an accident for example are "points de suture". Stitches in sewing would simply be "points" + the type of stitch (e.g: back stich > point arrière).
Sewing by hand, I would use a Sharps Size 8
