In Arabic, it is called the Hajj. This pilgrimage is in the city of Mecca, where is located the Kaaba. Nowadays, the city of Mecca is inside the borders of Saudi Arabia. The Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam and Muslims need to perform it once in their life, if they got the money and the health for it.
Muslims go to Mecca in Saudi Arabia during the Hajj season to perform the Hajj rituals. The Hajj ritual is obligatory to all Muslims who have attained the age of puberty and who has the financial resources and in good health to undertake it. Every Muslim is required to perform the Hajj only once in his/her lifetime. Hajj is one of the 5 pillars of Islam.
Once a year the Arabs came to Mecca for Pilgrimage. All the Idols they worshiped were displayed and it was like a carnival. A lot of money exchanged hands and it was a good time to display and sell goods. People travelled from everywhere to sell and buy goods. Lots of money was also given as offerings to the Pagan Gods, and as it was very lucrative this practice continued. Once Islam came to be accepted, all the idols were destroyed, and the yearly Pilgrimage which is done by the Muslims, who come from all over the world is called the Haj Pilgrimage.

There are categories of Muslims that are not obligated to perform the Pilgrimage: the sick, the poor (Pilgrimage involves a rather important sum of money for those who live at great disntace), the insane, the children, those imprisoned. Nowadays the Muslims that receive visa for entering Saudi Arabia is limited, so for those who die without performing the Pilgrimage due to lack of possibility, it is not considered a sin.
Hajj is obligatory on each Muslim man and woman once in a lifetime provided they can afford. The following are exempted: !. One who has no money to bear the expenses of travelling to Mecca and back. 2. A lunatic 3. A person who is ill and unable to travel. 4. A slave 5. A person who is not granted a visa to travel to Mecca.
They are not supposed to spend it on alcohol. But some do, that's human nature for you.
