According to the various model year Owner Guides for the Ford Expedition :
1997 to 2000 model years ( 5W-30 )
2001 and newer models ( 5W-20 )
On a 1997 Ford Expedition : The 4.6 liter V8 engine uses ( 4R70W ) The 5.4 liter V8 engine uses ( E4OD )
I BELIEVE that is the ( 4R70W ) with the 4.6 liter and the ( 4R100 ) with the 5.4 liter
4R70W with the 4.6 liter engine E4OD with the 5.4 liter engine
( 5W-20 ) is the recommended oil , according to the 2002 Ford Expedition Owner Guide
According to the 2006 Ford Expedition Owner Guide : For the 5.4 liter , 3V engine : ( " regular " unleaded gasoline , 87 octane )
According to the 2000 Ford Expedition Owner Guide : ( " regular " unleaded gasoline , 87 octane is used in the 4.6 and 5.4 liter V8 engines )
Motorcraft ( FL-820-S ) engine oil filter for the 4.6 and 5.4 liter engines in a 2001 Ford Expedition ( according to the Owner Guide and fordparts.com )
According to the 1997 Ford Expedition owners manual : For the 4.6 liter and 5.4 liter V8 engines : ( 5W-30 ) ( 6.0 quarts / 5.7 liters of engine oil with engine oil filter change )
According to the 2003 Ford Expedition Owner Guide : ( " regular " unleaded gasoline , 87 octane , is used in the 4.6 and 5.4 liter V8 engines )
I was looking at the 1997 Ford Expedition Owner Guide and it shows Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid for the two models of automatic transmission ( E4OD with the 5.4 liter ) I would also check to see if the type of fluid is engraved into the automatic transmission fluid dipstick
For a Ford Explorer : If you have the 4.0 liter V6 engine ( OHV and SOHC versions ) The recommended oil is 5W-30
