The 1994 Volkswagen Passat GLX VR6 came equipped with the 2.8L V6. The most modern downwardly specified oil for this application are European 0W40 and 5W40 synthetic*. It must be noted that the European designation for synthetic is stringent as is based on premium Group 4 and 5 oils, whereas in the United States oils can be branded synthetics but use mineral oil based Group 3s. European spec and bottled oils will list VW 502 00, and VW 505 00 on them to designate the most recent standard. 502 00 and 505 00 are fully downwardly compatible. Castrol Edge is German bottled and available for sale in the United States, furthermore Mobil 1's European Car Formula also meets and exceeds these VW requirements.
