For Commercial Drivers Licences, the same restrictions listed above are still in effect, and there are additional restrictions which may be imposed, such as:

  • Intrastate use only: While you may possess a CDL at 18 years of age, you must be 21 to operate a CMV in interstate travel. Anyone under 21 will be given this restriction.
  • No tractor-trailers: Not all combinations requiring a Class A CDL are tractor-trailers. A 26,000 GVWR truck pulling a 12,000 GVWR trailer would require one. While you can test with such a combination to get a Class A CDL, this in no way qualifies you to drive a tractor-trailer, and you'll be restricted from driving them until you're properly trained on how to drive a tractor-trailer.
  • No air brakes: In order to use air brakes in a commercial vehicle, you must take both the written test for air brakes, and road test in an air brake equipped vehicle. If you do not meet both of these, you receive a no air brake restriction. This is applicable only to CMVs - when operating an RV or other vehicle exempt from CDL requirements, the operators of those vehicles are not required to have any knowledge or training on the air brake systems those vehicles use, whatsoever (such is the wisdom of the DOT).

Codes for these restrictions (and all restrictions) vary from state to state.

What kind of a license do I need to drive a tow truck?

Towing businesses are highly regulated. In most states you need a special tow truck license. Often the local municipalities will have further restrictions. The type of license required to drive a tow truck depends on the state and the size of the tow truck. Flat bed drivers generally required a CDL where as claw truck drivers generally can use their regular drivers license.
