The collapse of the Soviet Union occurred gradually over a period of around 6 or 7 years, culminating in the dissolution at the very end of 1991. At this point in time, George H.W. Bush was the US President. The Berlin Wall came down in 1989. The Soviet Union did not have a president at any stage during this time; the equivalent leader was the General Secretary of the Central Committee, and this position was abolished in mid-1991, leaving no single leader or head of state at the time of the dissolution. In 1985, a new leader came to power in the Soviet Union: Mikhail Gorbachev.
