BASICALLY, the SCHOOL that issues the DIPLOMA has to accredited by the state. So if the school is legal and accredited and accepted by the state as an institution of higher learning, then any DIPLOMA THEY ISSUE IS ACCEPTED. In the case of home schooling, there are general guidelines and minimum requirements that the town and/or state set forth. Since "home" is not an institution, the student would have to pass an entrance exam or basic knowledge exam to be accepted into a college or university. Remember, a diploma is only a piece of paper REPRESENTING what you have learned. Someone can graduate with a diploma and be far behind and barely literate (unfortunately), while someone else can come from a less mainstream learning situation, and be far ahead of their peers and score great on an entrance exam. If you are talking about going from "high school" level to college level, they base a great deal on your S.A.T. score. So whether you were home schooled or self taught or mainstreamed, if you score a 1600 on your S.A.T. you are in regardless!!

Yes. Virtually no College or University requires a High School Diploma or GED to be accepted for study. Most applicants that are accepted to Colleges or Universities are accepted during their Senior year before they graduate. Some College or University students begin as 'early entrants', meaning they begin their studies after 1, 2, or 3 years of High School without ever earning a High School diploma or GED.
