Provided the tank is large enough (1 gallon of water per 1 inch of fish) Tetras, Corydoras, and most smaller Cichlids, Livebearers, Danios, and Barbs can be kept safely with Bettas. The only fish that Bettas fight with are other Bettas.

Most females do best with other fish, Males are known to fight more.

This is a list of betta friendly fish.

Tetras

· Guppies

· Loaches

· Plecos

· Some Gourami's (Though I don't suggest this type of fish as Betta compatible, some people have had better luck.)

· Paradise Fish

· Snails

· Some Barbs

· Some Danios
Bettas can live perfectly well with so many different species that it is impossible to list them all here. Just remember that Bettas are small, slow moving, peacefull fish. The only fish a male Betta will have problems with are either another male of the same species or some of the well known fin nippers like Barbs. Obviously very large fish would eat them so they are out of the question too.

so far, the betta fish attacks any fish it sees. so its better to keep it alone with very little or no currents in the tank because it likes still waters.

actually thats no true i currently have my male beta in a tank with a pleco 2 picus catfish and a violet goby (made the mistake of putting glofish in with him with out doing all the research first and they actually tore into the beta ) so for for me what works is have a larger tank with the beta in first and adjusted then when you buy fish to add with him dont get any long fancy tailed fish they will probably feel its another male and attack but maybe not. and avoid fin nippers like glo fish. let the bag adjust like normal before adding them and watch your beta's reaction if he puffs up and seems aggressive then probably no but if he seems to puff up or hide then swim away and come back less aggressive give him more time to adjust to seeing the other fish and after adding them watch the interaction usually mine just gets mad when the two cats are in his "bubble" meaning crowding him but then alot of times ill find him hanging out with the goby (and yes i know goby needs brackish water but ive had some thrive in fresh but do plan on buying a bigger tank and making brack for him)

Bettas only attack other fish that resemble a male betta otherwise they do not like large tanks with a lot of water flow and a pictus cat gets big enough to eventually eat a betta.Better to get the betta out before then and the bigger the goby gets the more salt it needs so its only a matter of time before he croaks too.

Its actually kinda cruel to put a betta in a large tank they have no swim bladder and have to exert energy constantly to stay close enough to the surface to breathe air, eventually, your betta will drown.

All this being said if you have to put something in there with the betta because you think its lonely which is by far not true get 5 gallon tank with slow filter and put a cory cat in there it stays small and they will not harm each other or stress each other out,but make sure there are ornaments or driftwood in there that the betta can rest on about 4 inches from the surface away from the flow of the filter. Or get a larger tank for the other fish and keep your betta in a bowl by himself where he is happy.

if you have a small filtered tank 5 gallons or less(as bettas do not do well in a large tank),Cory Catfish do well. However the best way to keep a betta is in a small bowl without a filter as they live in rice paddies in mud puddles and dont appreciate moving water.

Do betta fish lay how long do betta fish live for?

You mean betta fish, right? Betta fish cna lay eggs if you have two of the opposite gender in the same tank. If you have a male and female betta in one tank, they won't fight. If you have two females or two males, they will fight. So, you could see if they get allong. ig the bettas do lay eggs, they can still live together, but you MUST place tyhe eggs in a seperate tank, or they'll most likely be eatten. As for the lifecycle of a betta fish, if properly cared for, they can live for years. Two years is very old for some fish, but one man had a goldfish for 13 years!

Is there any negative effects placing gold fish with tropical fish?

Most fish get along well. However, do NOT mix betta fish with other fish. Not even another betta. You have to have a permit to have to betta fish in the same tank with eachother. Betta fish are only mixed to mate. Bettas are not born in the egg. They come out as a very small fish. After the betta babies have come out, all of the fish are seperated. Even the parents, if the betta babies are left in the tank with the others the betta parents are very likely to eat the others.

What is the difference between a betta fish and a Siamese fighting fish?

Betta fish can refer to any member of the genus Betta, which has numerous species, all native to swamps of Southeast Asia. The Siamese fighting fish is only one specific species, B. splendens.
