The only offering allowed at the altar of incense was an incense made up of a specific blend of 11 spices. This exact blend was used twice a day, every day of the year. The only exception was during Yom Kippur when the spices were ground twice as fine as the rest of the year.

The spices that went into the incense were:

  1. balsam

  2. onycha

  3. galbanun (chelbena)

  4. frankincense

  5. myrrh

  6. cassia

  7. spikenard

  8. saffron

  9. costus

  10. aromatic bark

  11. cinnamon

Does incense burning kill bacteria?

Many types of incense have antibacterial properties and can be used as a disinfectant to kill germs in the environment. In a recent Chinese study, incense was used to sterilize a hospital ward and was found to be just as effective as more standard means of sterilization such as using steam. By keeping your environment sterile, you can prevent infections and disease. Because many herbs, such as Myrrh, also act as antiseptics, gathering the smoke from certain types of incense and rubbing it over a wound may actually help the wound heal faster since the smoke can kill germs on the wound.

Does incense cause health problems?

Most incense contains toxic ingredients that are not labelled. In addition, the smoke from the incense ingredients and the burning of any stick that they are attached to, create smoke that is a form of air pollution. This is most noticeable if you have an air purifier in the room; it will become coated with black soot. The best types of incense to use contain natural, non-toxic ingredents only. In this case, the incense purifies and blesses the space in which it is burned, according to Ayurveda. Burning incense is a form of aromatherapy. Incense is burned as an offering and purificatory substance in many world religious tradtions, such as the Roman Catholic Church and Hindu pujas and ceremonies. Good books about incense include The Book of Incense: Enjoying the Traditional Art of Japanese Scents by Kiyoko Morita (1992, Kodansha international) and The Complete Incense Book by Susanne Fischer-Rizzi (1996, Sterling). I sell natural, non-toxic Shoyeido incense in sticks and in coils on my Transcendence Design website. It was fun but then i couldn't breath the rest of the night cause we didn't vent the tent. So don't burn in an uncirculated room
