DOT 3 or DOT 4, you can use either, or both, they are fully compatible. However DO NOT mix DOT3/4 with DOT 5, they ARE NOT compatible. If mixed it will form a gel/slime type mixture and completely foul your system. Hope this helps!

To bleed the cluth on a Yamaha Royal Star 1300 first drain all of the brake fluid from the vehicle. After draining the brake fluid pump the brake pedal up and down several times. All oil will then drain from the system.
According to the owner's manual, the recommended brake fluid is DOT4, and if it's not available, DOT3 can be used.

It uses brake fluid in the brake fluid reservoir. The clutch fluid (brake fluid) is fed by the brake fluid reservoir. The clutch fluid reservoir is just beneath the brake fluid reservoir. So, add fluid to the brake fluid reservoir to fill the clutch fluid, also.
