Some schools today offer a specialized program in game design. And that's a pretty popular route to go if you want to get into video game design. Other places lump it as part of their computer programming / computer science program. And some schools have it as part of their multimedia programs. So which major you need depends a lot on the particular school. At one school, you might get a major in game design. At another, it could be a multimedia degree that has some gaming as part of the program. Or another school might only have computer science or computer programming. But with this major, you'd still know how to program a computer and would still be able to write a game program.
