To grow strong and straight, bones need to be supplied with calcium from the diet and a vitamin called Vitamin "D" which enables the calcium to be used in the bones. Lack of Vitamin "D" causes bones to deform as you grow up, leading to a malformed skeleton, a condition called "Rickets".

While some Vitamin "D" can be obtained from the diet, most of it is made by the action of Sunlight (the UV part of Sunlight) on the fats just under the skin. Thus exposure of the skin to sunlight is important to ensure that there is enough Vitamin "D" to make healthy, strong bones.

Indeed the difference in skin color seen in humanity is caused by this need for Vitamin "D", at high latitudes the Sun's strength is weaker and you need a fair skin to be able to make the Vitamin (Dark skin blocks the light too much). While near the equator there is enough light to make the Vitamin but the Sun's strength is so strong that fair people burn while dark skin is OK and protects the skin from damage.

Vitamin D synthesis is aided by sunlight. Vitamin D deficiency can cause rickets in children - a defect that both impedes bone growth and results in bones bending, bowing, or otherwise deforming under the weight of the child. In adults, the analog condition is called "Osteomalacia" and results in softening of the bones leading to problems with the spine, bowing of the long bones of the legs and increased fragility of bones in general (they can break easier). This is due to its role in aiding intestinal absorption of zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphate and CALCIUM (which is rather important for bones). Unfortunately very few foods contain much vitamin D so most people get most of their vitamin D from "dermal synthesis" from 7-dehydrocholesterol. UVB radiation converts this cholesterol to Vitamin D3. Fortunately most people can get sufficient vitamin D from fairly moderate sun exposure to the face, arms and legs. For most people 5-30 minutes twice per week is enough; the darker the skin and the weaker the sunlight, the more sun it takes (which is not normally enough to get a sunburn). Because glass blocks most of the UVB, sunlight through windows doesn't help very much. Natural sunlight is best, but tanning beds and sunlamps generally produce enough UVB to go with the predominant UVA wavelengths to still be useful if one cannot get enough direct sunlight, such as during the winter in arctic and near-arctic regions. One alternative source for vitamin D in high latitudes is Cod Liver Oil - kind of nasty, but it beats getting rickets. In 1923 a scientist figured out that he could irradiate (with UV radiation) some foods, like milk, to convert some of the content to vitamin D - hence the commonly sold "vitamin-D" whole milk. You only see whole milk labeled this way because vitamin D is fat soluble, consequently when the fat is removed from the milk to get 2%, 1%, or skim milk, vitamin D is removed with the fat.

Note that, despite the commonly held belief, the most recent medical studies have failed to find any link between vitamin D deficiency and osteoporosis - although its role in preventing osteomalacia certainly should help lessen the effects of osteoporosis (which also makes bones more brittle); without adequate vitamin D osteoporosis will be compounded by the effects of osteomalacia.
