Fort Pillow Battle of Fort Pillow (now a State Historical Park near Henning, TN) was fought on 12 April 1864. General Forest had 1500 men who attacked this small fort that over-looked the Mississippi River. The fort was defended by only 550 men, who were mostly artillerymen and half of them were black soldiers. The battle was a one-sided fight after the Union commander was killed by a sharp-shooter. However, the replacement commander would not surrender. So General Forest ordered an attack on the fort. When the Confederates took breached the fort's inner works, some Union troops refused to surrender. There is some controversay as to if the blacks were allowed to surrender or if the Confederates killed those who did surrender. Thus it was referred to as the Massacre of Fort Pillow, even though it was a battle. Andersonville Here the war crime was mistreatment of prisoners of war. The Colonel of the camp was tried on war crimes and he used the same defense that was used by the Nazi leaders at the Nurenberg Trail---he claimed he was only following orders from higher command. He was found guilty and executed. BTW, the prison camp at Rock Island, IL, had a higher Death Rate than Andersonville during the peak of the winter months. Nobody was tried for war crimes for those lives.

African-Americans fought mainly for the north, though the south formed a few black units very late in the war. Both sides segregated the African-Americans into separate units, with black enlisted personnel and white officers. Initially the black Union soldiers were paid less than white soldiers of the same rank. Union commanders believed at first blacks would not or could not fight well. Confederates were often enraged to be opposed by black troops, whom they knew to be mostly runaway slaves. The Confederates at first threatened to kill all blacks found in Union uniforms, rather than take them prisoners, and to execute their white officers, but the Yankees threatened to retaliate against Confederate prisoners if they did. Confederates were still reluctant to take black prisoners, as at "The Crater" near Petersburg in July, 1864, or at Fort Pillow.

Pillow can be used as a noun or a verb. There are two meanings to it. Using pillow as a noun refers to the object we use for sleeping or as a part of the cushion in a furniture. Using pillow as a verb may mean in support of or as protection against blows. Example: "During a heavy wind and rain, Elizabeth pillowed her child with her body." or "Too exhausted to run, he found the closest mound of dry earth to rest as on a pillow." However, in writing, it's best to keep it simple - pillow works best as a noun.
