There is no denying that this treatment hurts, however the reduction in AKs is significant and does outweigh the Level 6-8 pain during treatment and the residual 4-6 pain post treatment. Levulan Kerastick, approved in 1999, was prescribed with a soluition application on Day 1 followed by Blu Light exposure 18-24 hours later. Most Dermatologists now use an application-light exposure timeframe of 2 hours. In moving to a 2 hour expsoure timeframe, pain and side effects have been drastically reduced. (In 2002 the blu light exposure often times produced pain levels above 10+.) Current side effects based on red haried complesion: Moderate pain first 36 hours. Reduced by NSAID products and/or Rx painkillers. Itchy/Scaling sores 36 - 72+ hours. Redness 3-5 days
