God promised Abram (Abraham) that he would be a father of many nations and that through him all nations would be blessed. It is believed that this was a reference to a promised Messiah. God also promised him and his descendants "all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession." [This possession was not realized in Abraham's lifetime, but only after the exile of the children of Israel (Abraham's grandson) to Egypt, the Exodus from there following Moses and the 40 years wandering in the desert.] For his part, Abraham was to see to it that all males in his household were to be circumcised, and that this would continue with all his progeny. Genesis 17 3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, 4As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. 5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. 6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. 8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. 9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. 10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.
Abraham was to have faith in one God only.
All Jewish boys (followers) were to be circumcised as a sign of agreeing to the
covenant with God.
Abram's name was changed to Abraham (Abraham meaning father of multitude
of Nations). God commanded Abram to.
There should be some more...
======================================
There is.
A "covenant" is a contract. The answer above tries to list only Abraham's
responsibilities under the contract, without mentioning those of the other
party to it.
The other party to the contract committed to make Abraham the father of
many nations of people, specifically to make his descendants as numerous
as the (apparent) number of stars in the sky and particles of dust on the
ground, and to give his descendants title to all of the land that he had seen
during his commanded travels, and that he had seen during his life as a bedouin
shepherd, and that he could see from where he stood at the time of the contract's
closing.
The terms of the contract are clearly recorded in the first major section of
The Bible, filed under "Genesis".
A more exact way of putting it is what is the promise G-D made Abraham.
The answer is that G-D promised Abraham that he would live a peaceful life and that the nation G-D would make out of him would go down to Egypt but only to strengthen them.
There are three covenants. Two which God made with Abraham (Genesis ch.15 and Genesis ch.17), and one with Abraham's Israelite descendants in the time of Moses after the Exodus.
Abraham's covenants with God:
1) In Genesis ch.15, the Covenant Between the Parts:
a) God informs Abraham of future events (the Egyptian exile)
b) God promises the land of Canaan (Israel) to Abraham's descendants
c) The covenant is finalized through a demonstration of God's presence (see Genesis 15:7-9 and 15:17).
2) In Genesis ch.17, the covenant of circumcision:
a) The promises of many descendants (17:2,3) and of inheriting the land of Canaan are repeated (17:8), but the main thing in this covenant is the promise that God will be the God of Abraham (17:7, 17:8).
b) God promises that Abraham and Sarah will have a son (17:15-16), whom they will name Isaac (17:19) and who will be the continuation of God's covenant with Abraham (17:21).
c) The covenant itself is manifested through circumcision, for Abraham and his descendants (17:10).
This was the covenant in which God promised to give Abraham progeny and that they would receive the Holy Land. See the attached Related Link.
