Answer

Alexander the great (356-323 BC) was best known for conquering most of the known Western world in the 4th century BC. He succeeded his father Philip II as king of Macedon and Greece in 336 BC at the age of 20 and set about invading the Persian Empire, which had attacked Greece a century and a half earlier. Alexander led the Greeks into Persia, defeated all Persian forces, and conquered the empire within 12 years.

His new empire spread from Greece (and parts of modern-day Bulgaria) to India (modern-day Pakistan) and included Asia Minor (Turkey), Syria, Palestine (Israel), Egypt, Mespotamia (Iraq), Persia (Iran), Bactria and Sogdiana (Afghanistan and parts of Uzbekhistan), and India (Pakistan).

Alexander was arguably the greatest conqueror and warrior in history. He created the largest land empire in Western history second to Rome. Unlike modern generals, Alexander actually fought in battle. He usually led the charge himself, making him beloved by his men. He never lost a battle and though wounded a few times, always successfully fought in battle.

In addition to conquering much of the known world at the time, he also founded more than a dozen cities, the most notable being Alexandria in Egypt, which became the capital of the Western world for the next three centuries until the rise of Rome. He attempted to combine Western history with Eastern culture, thereby creating the 'Hellenistic' world and introducing Greek culture all the way to India. His cities were renowned for being centers of learning, and Alexandria in Egypt produced advances in art, literature, and science, introducing to the world figurse like Archimedes, Eratosthenes, and Euclid.

Though he died before his 33rd birthday, he had planned further wars in the West, intending to conquer Carthage and other great cultures in Western Europe. His empire did not last long after his death, but legends about his life and achievements were so widespread, he became one of the most well-known figures in history, with perhaps more legends spanning different cultures than anyone in history but Jesus Christ.

Alexander the Great also took only three years to adapt to Geurilla Warfare to conquer Afghanistan.
