In 1700 the colonies were made up mainly of farms. The major cities were NYC, Boston, Charlotte, and there was still a lot of land that was wilderness. The average person lived in small communities, but most lived miles from another person. Families were large because children often died at young ages from disease or accidents. The families had to make or trade for everything they needed and they grew food, milked cows, fed chickens, churned butter, sewed clothing, to take a bath they had to carry the water and heat it. Bath water was used by family members over and over. Oldest son had to help with the farm and the girls with the house. Few went to church according to historians and church records. To live in this time a person had to be tough.
