Commonly known as "the Father of Microbiology", van Leewenhoek is considered to be the first microbiologist. He used his own handcrafted microscopes and became the first to observe and describe single-celled organisms -- which he originally referred to as animalcules -- and which we now call microorganisms. His presentation of this discovery was first disdained and criticized but eventually recognized and accepted. He contributed to the improvement of microscopes, developing over 250 during his lifetime --one which is said to have magnified 500 times.

Key discoveries of Van Leeuwenhoek were:

  • Infusoria -- now known in zoology as protists, 1674
  • Bacteria -- from the human mouth, 1676
  • Spermatozoa, 1677
  • the banded pattern of muscle fibers, 1682
