The Apollo missions were started in the '60's during the Space Age. The goal was to send a man to the moon and collect samples for scientific study. This is what Neil Armstrong went to the moon for. There were 13 missions: the last one ended in a failure. Also, some others that I don't know failed as well.

There were 7 missions planned to go to the moon, but only 6 made successful landings. Apollo missions 11 through 17 all landed on the moon, excluding Apollo 13 which suffered an explosion on its way to the moon.

In order to give the impression that the Apollo program was motivated by the desire

for real, substantial scientific research. Remember, there were six (6) moon landings,

and each one returned samples from a different part of the lunar surface.

Back at the beginning of the space race with the Soviet Union, the ultimate conceivable goal at the time was to land men on the moon, and return them to earth. The Soviets had made the first launch of a satellite with Sputnik, embarrassing the united States. They also achieved the first person in space with Yuri Gagarin. Once Once smaller goals like putting a man-made object in space, putting a man in space, orbiting the earth, space walks and such had been achieved, the moon was the last goal. The "final leg" of the space race was on. We won that leg of the race when Neil Armstrong became the first human to step onto the surface of the moon. The mission was Apollo 11, and they walked on the moon on July 20, 1969.

The three astronauts for the mission were Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin. Collins remained in the command module (Columbia), while Armstrong and Aldrin took the lunar module (Eagle) to the Moon's surface.
