Avalon (or Afalon) is a Welsh placename meaning 'The Apple Place'. In early Brythonic folkwisdom the Apple is considered the Fruit of Wisdom. Reasons why this might be so are discussed by Robert Graves in his book The White Goddess - though Graves' arguments are more suggestive than conclusive.
Avalon is hence a place of wisdom, calm and healing. When Arthur is dying a magical boat appears to carry him away to Avalon:- perhaps so that he can be healed there, or perhaps because the place of all wisdom can only be reached through the portal of death.
