By most accounts, they were unusual. Mr. Obama's mother was a young white college student living in Hawaii when she gave birth to him; her husband, an African exchange student, turned out to have another family back in Kenya, which broke up the marriage. (It should also be noted that interracial marriage was still very uncommon in 1961.) Barack's father was almost completely absent from his life. His mom finished college and even got a PhD; she remarried, and the family moved to Indonesia, where Barack lived for four years. Along the way, his mom became fascinated by anthropology, which was her true passion. But she did seem to care deeply about her son Barack: she read to him, she tutored him, she encouraged him to study. However, the evidence is that she was more interested in her work as an anthropologist.

Eventually, young Barack ended up being raised back in Hawaii by his maternal grandparents, while his mother pursued her research in Indonesia and elsewhere. Still, even years later, Barack Obama recalled his mother fondly and said she was an inspirational figure in his life. He also credited his maternal grandmother with being a guide and a mentor to him. Thus, if we look at the president's formative years, he was not raised in a traditional way, but he did seem to have a lot of love in his life and while his mother was by most accounts sort of a "free spirit" who was dedicated to anthropological research, she still made sure her son had a stable home and went to good schools.
