He was born to a white college student from Hawaii (born in Kansas) and a black student from Kenya, at a time when interracial marriage was still rare. His biological dad left the family when young Barack was only two, and he only saw him once more in his entire life. Barack spent his first five years in Hawaii, in lower-middle class conditions. His maternal grandparents were very helpful as his mom finished her education. But when Barack was five, his mom re-married and they moved to Indonesia, where he had to learn a new language and a new culture. He stayed there for four years before returning to Hawaii to live with is grandparents and finish his education.
