Transport on roads was still mostly horse-drawn, though the motor car was making an impact. Bicycling was a craze with both sexes, who took to the roads in large numbers. Women's legs could be seen for the first time.

Most married women stayed at home with their families, though most single women worked for a living, and of course some poor married women had to work.

All households that could afford it employed domestic servants, even quite a modest household would be able to afford to employ a maid-of-all work.

Many of the domestic conveniences that we take for granted now were not available in those days. A lot of people did have indoor Plumbing in 1901, and electric light and telephones were also available, but not everyone had them. Washing machines had yet to be invented. They had gramophones, but no TV or radio.

The motion picture industry was in its infancy, with short silent films being shown. The assasination of Presidnet McKinley and the death of his killer was one of several real-life events re-enacted for the cinema. More people though would enjoy going to the theatre or the music-hall (vaudeville in America)

The New Woman was a subject of much comment in America. Women were going to college in large numbers, eding their way into the professions, and taking a great interest in social reform. The leader of the suffragete movement was Carrie Champman Catt, processions in favour of women's rights took place all over America. The Temperence Movement was in full swing, with Carrie Nation and others like her smashing up saloons with axes.

* You would not have electricity or any item needing electricity, you would have an outhouse rather than an indoor bathroom, you would walk on dirt paths. In short any convienance you have now wasn't there then.

In 1901 14 year old girls were sent to school. They learnt about sewing, cooking, cleaning, parenting and how to become the perfect housewife. When they reached high schoo, they were encouraged to drop out and get married to settle down. 14 Year old boys had two choices. Either become educated and stay in school until year 12 or to become working class men at age 14.

Boys and girls were treated very differently. {| |- |

1901: Birth of Australian Federal Parliament

On 1 January 1901 in Centennial Park Sydney, the Governor-General Lord Hopetoun read the Proclamation that created the Commonwealth of Australia. This new Commonwealth was made up of all the former colonies on the Australian continent - New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia. These colonies which had been founded from 1788 onwards, with the arrival of the First Fleet of convicts, now all became states of Australia with their own constitutions and self-government within the federal union.

It was very difficult living in the 1900s. Most teens didn't go to school but helped their parents on the farm or mills. If they did go to school they went to a crowded and unwealthy school. Only the rich and wealthy had a good life. Very few had good transportation and many families had to resort to walking. Your life today is much more survivable than back in the early 1900s.

im using this in my assignment, ive just taken notes from different websites, hope this helps who ever needs it x
