Prior to Catherine's death and exile from court, Mary I was taken out of the line of succession due to the annullment of her parents' marriage and thus was made a bastard. She would then served for a time in the household of her half-sister Elizabeth I and her welfare was even threatened when she refused to see Anne Boleyn, her father's new bride as the queen and her mother as simply Princess Dowager. After her mother's and Anne Boleyn's death (which were roughly 5 months apart), Mary's future remained for the most part unsure, but the death of her half brother Edward VI and the execution of Lady Jane Grey in 1553 eventually made way for her to finally become Queen of England. The reign however was marred with many difficulites: the bitter persecution of Protestants (Mary was an extremely devout Catholic), two phantom pregnancies and the country's monetary issues were a mere few and in November 1558 she died, leaving no heir to the throne and allowing her Protestant half-sister, Elizabeth I to take the throne.
