By the time of Constantine's long reign as emperor, 'Christians' comprised about one-half the population of the Roman Empire. The Empire was in decline, and it was under attack from 'barbarians' of territories in northern and Western Europe. Constantine was clever enough to realize that he needed to include this enormous group so as to strengthen his and the Empire's position. Even this decision was not sufficient, however, so later he moved the seat of the Empire from Rome to Constantinople (present-day Istanbul). Eventually, Rome itself was besieged (as Constantine anticipated); and, later still, Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks.
