Cyprus is an island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is in a strategic location near Greece, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey. It is for that reason that Ottoman troops captured Cyprus in the sixteenth century and it remains divided between the Greek dominated Republic of Cyprus and a Turkish Cypriot North Cyprus.

Cyprus was since ancient times a source of copper (hence its name). Also, its position near the coast of Turkey gave it strategic value for the Venetians in their protracted struggle with the Ottoman Empire.
