He was a pastor by profession. He authored seven books. He was a civil rights leader. The Rev. King was a preacher at a Montgomery, Ala., which became a pivotal point in the Civil Rights Movement where he was chosen to lead the Montgomery Improvement Association and he adopted Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolent methods. He later was pastor of an Atlanta church.

In case you're wondering about the "doctor" in his title, he received a PhD. in systematic theology from Boston University in 1955, as well as numerous honorary degrees in addition to his bachelor's and divinity degrees.
