The voyage by the Portuguese explorer on the behalf of Spain was the first to sail completely around the world (1519-1522).
Magellan himself died in the Philippines in 1521, eighteen months before the voyage was completed in 1522. Only one of his five ships, Victoria, completed the circumnavigation of the globe, with just 18 survivors of the 250 who started the journey. Magellan's successor as captain, the Spaniard Juan Sebastian Elcano, had decided to continue to sail west after Magellan's death.
The main record of the voyage is the journal kept by the Italian scholar Antonio Pigafetta, who served as an assistant to both captains.
Ferdinand Magellan is credited with being the man who led the first successful attempt to circumnavigate the Earth. He became the first person to lead an expedition sailing westward from Europe to Asia and to cross the Pacific Ocean. He did not complete the entire circumnavigation as he was killed during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines, on 27 April 1521, but he was the leader of the expedition, and thus he received the credit.
Magellan and most of his crew did not complete the trip but they were the first Europeans to circumnavigate (sail all the way around) the globe.
