There were two battalions in the battle; he commanded one of them.
(Generally speaking...because this topic can get VERY complicated...a US Army/Marine infantry/armor/possibly even artillery battalions in Vietnam contained approximately 600 men; sometimes up to 1,000 men per battalion...but to be safe, generally around 600 men).
In the US Army (during Vietnam...again this is a new century, with new rules) a ground battalion was commanded by a LTC (Lieutenant Colonel...one rank above a Major). A battalion consisted of about 3 to 4 line companies (aka letter companies; A, B, C, etc.), each commanded by a Captain (one rank lower than a Major).
Henry Percy ("Hotspur") is killed at the Battle of Shrewsbury by Prince Henry ("Hal/Harry"), the future King Henry V. Falstaff later claims to have killed Hotspur, although he had simply stabbed the corpse.
Your going to have read the book on that battle; because as usual the MOVIE had it half-a--ed wrong. TWO battalions lost 300 dead GIs in 3 days of fighting. The film only showed one battalion with less than half those losses. Which is a discredit to the US fighting men that died in those 3 days. Maybe LTC Moore didn't plan the film to be that way, but that's the way it reached the audience. Read the book: We Were Soldiers Once...And Young! By LTC Hal Moore.

1. Airmobile Divisions (this includes Air Cavalry concepts) had to be combat tested. 2. The new UH-1 Iroquois (Huey) had to be combat tested, in reference to the above. 3. The new M16 jungle rifle had yet to be tested with regular US Army infantry fighting regular NVA infantry. 4. The US Army had never fought (engaged) the NVA in a conventional battle at battalion level. This battle would test both sides. 5. US Infantrymen at Ia Drang fought the battle while wearing state side issue black leather combat boots and standard issue army fatiques. The new Vietnam jungle boots and rip stop cotten jungle fatiques would be issued afterward.

HAL .
LTC Hal Moore fought his battalion at the Ia Drang in '65. The film "We Were Soldiers Once...And Young" (the full title of the book) was his story. However, ALL US Army ground battalions (and probably all US Marine ground battalions) were commanded by LTCs or promotable Majors. A Rifle Company (Infantry Company) was commanded by a CPT or a promotable 1LT (1st Lieutenant). Another words, they're all famous (if they've been blooded in battle); it's just that some have books written about them or films made about them. And some don't.
Hal Lamar went by Hal.
