David fought many wars, throughout which Israel became increasingly prosperous and powerful. You can read about him in the Book of Samuel and the Book of Chronicles, which are in the Jewish Bible, or in Second Kings and First Chronicles, which are in the Christian bible.
Under David, Israel was a strong military force, and he extensively expanded the kingdom and organized it well. He allocated cities of refuge, expanded Levitical cities, and returned the Ark to Jerusalem, the city he made the capital of his kingdom. David also was keen to rebuild the temple and although he was not allowed to do so, he suggested the idea and worked toward the possibility. Finally, he led Israel with an unshakable trust and reverence for God.
