He was the chief of the Algonquin Indians when the first British colonists arrived in Virginia. As such, he provided the first interactions between the white European settlers and the native peoples of the "new world." He tried to have a peaceful relationship with the settlers, but by many accounts, there was mistrust on both sides, and the peace treaty did not hold. (It is difficult to know who was to blame, or who did what to whom, but suffice it to say the colonists wanted more land, and the Indians wanted to protect what they believed was theirs.) Powhatan was the father of Pocahontas, and it was she who saved the life of John Smith, one of the leaders of the British colonists, when the Indians wanted to execute him.
