Walt Disney, whose ability to draw was recognized early on, attended Benton Grammar School in Kansas City with his sister Ruth. In 1917, the family moved to Chicago. There, Disney began his freshman year at McKinley High School and started taking night courses at the Chicago Art Institute. He dropped out of school after a short time to join the army (World War 1 was being fought). He was rejected because he was underage so he joined the Red Cross. He was sent to France as an ambulance driver and returned to Kansas City after a year to begin working as a graphic artist. Walt Disney had a total of about 9 years of formal education.
