Getting a firm grip on those economies and on their government became therefore necessary.
Later in the 19th century, strategic considerations became also important: becoming master of countries in order to protect trade routes or accessability of existing colonies. "Status" finally became a factor: you simply did not count as a major power without having colonies. This for instance explains the colonial adventures in the early 20th century by the US, Germany, France and Italy
