After the closure of the inland Silkroad due to wars cutoff European access to spices from China and India it was necessary to find and use sea routes.

The easiest sea routes were already dominated by the Arabs, who charged high prices.

A sea route around the southern tip of Africa was quickly discovered, but was very hazardous.

Several people proposed a possible sea route to the west (sailing around the world) would be easier, but nobody actually attempted this until Columbus (who severely underestimated the distance).
