Back in the middle ages, Europe was still a rural area, with rural societies, which means that any trading was usually just that- trading one good for another, no money involved. Traders and merchants would travel around, seeing if anybody wanted to trade for their goods, and if both parties were pleased, the transaction would work. That simple.
