Ancient Italy was inhabited by the Etruscans and later was part of the Ancient Roman Empire which is considered by many to be the beginning of civilization as we know it today.

The ancient Romans invented many of the things we take for granted today such as spa baths, central heating, public toilets, jewellery, wedding traditions and even graffiti.

The other amazing remnant of the ancient Roman Empire was their architecture and art : such things are the Colosseum in Rome, the Pantheon, the Roman Forum, all of which can still be seen in Rome today.

There were some traditions which we may think rather barbaric today such as gladiator games which pitted slaves against wild animals - but the Romans viewed that in the same way we would look at going to a football match - just one form of entertainment after a hard week's work.

I have added a link to this question which will take you to several web pages about ancient Rome.
