For the same reason that most people do most things; to make a profit, get some money, accomplish something spectacular.

In this case, Columbus had figured that instead of sailing south around Africa and then east, he could sail WEST and find a quicker route to China and the "spice islands". Please remember that in the mid-1400s, spices were worth much MORE than their weight in gold; a successful voyage to China and back, returning with a hold full of spices, could make a captain's fortune.

Columbus therefore sailed WEST, into the stormy Atlantic Ocean, looking for his fortune. He didn't find what he was looking for. There's an old joke, which is perfectly true; Columbus left Spain, not knowing where he was going. When he got back, he didn't know where he'd been. And he did it all on borrowed money.
