The Battle of Appomattox Court House was a small engagement between the remains of John Gordon's II Corps and Fitzhugh Lee's Cavalry Corps of Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. In the early morning hours of April 9, 1865, General Gordon instructed his senior division commander Major General Brian Grimes to "drive those fellows off." He was refering to the dismounted Union cavalry skirmish line and battery of horse artillery that was occupying a ridge west of Appomattox Court House that was astride the Lynchburg-Stage Coach Road, the road Lee's army was trying to retreat down. After initial success, the Confederates captured the Union battery and reached the crest of the ridge. They were devastated when they saw thousands of Union infantry blocking their path. These hard-marching men were part of John Gibbon's XXIV Corps of the Union Army of the Potomac, who had kept up a forced march to get in front of the Confederate infantry. Knowing the cause was lost, many Confederates began to withdraw back to the Court House. Gordon, knowing he could not hold off the Union infantry, sent a messege to Lee asking for reinforcements. When none could be offered, Lee was forced to send a flag of truce between the two lines. This battle was the final hope to escape for the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, and when it failed, they were forced to surrender.
