During colonial times women were treated as loyal servants to men. Often times this meant that women took care of children, cleaned the house, and cooked.
Life for the women in the colonies were hard. They worked twice as hard as the men. they worked parts of the fields, tended to the animals on the farm, kept the house clean and in order, fed the family, and sometimes gave the kids an education. yet they were not allowed to speak among the men, couldn't vote, and couldn't take part in the government decisions
In North Carolina colony it was hard for women. Women that were unmarried or was a widow had some rights but the rights were protected by the law, those rights were that they can keep their own wages, make contracts to the court system if needed, collect rent, and own or sell property. If widowed, women in their own right could inherit their husband's property and run his business. Women who were married had all their rights passed to their husband. With limited legal rights women could also be able to distinguish themselves. Women might run a late husband's business or work in their father's occupation, ones that weren't worked as stream stresses and worked in boarding houses.
